Climate Strong Communities (CSC) will launch the next generation of equitable, multi-hazard, pro-active resiliency and sustainability projects by maximizing unprecedented infrastructure and climate funding opportunities focused on the most at-risk and environmental justice neighborhoods in New York City.

Leverage existing resiliency and sustainability planning and capital commitments
Maximize recent federal and state infrastructure and climate funding opportunities
Develop a community-centered equitable planning process by proactively engaging with stakeholders

In its first year, the Climate Strong Communities program worked in Soundview (the Bronx), Brownsville (Brooklyn), Corona (Queens), and Port Richmond (Staten Island) neighborhoods. It will also build on prior work in Canarsie (Brooklyn) and East Harlem (Manhattan).
For year two of the program, we are working in Concourse and Mott Haven-Port Morris (the Bronx), Coney Island and East New York (Brooklyn), Flushing and Rockaway/ Mott Basin (Queens), and Stapleton (Staten Island).
CSC will implement infrastructure projects that address critical climate risk needs including street cooling features, solar energy, raised shorelines, and resilience hubs.
Climate Strong Communities hosted the program’s second round of public workshops in March 2024. Workshop attendees discussed potential CSC projects and shared their communities’ priorities.

CSC will work to expand the tree canopy, particularly in neighborhoods with high Heat Vulnerability Index and low tree canopy coverage, and install other sustainability measures to reduce ambient temperatures.
CSC will work to build green infrastructure such as rain gardens to absorb rainwater, street flooding from precipitation and provide greening to neighborhoods.
The city will lead by example by making our buildings more sustainable to meet our carbon neutrality goals and more resilient to address climate risks.
