NYC Transit

NYC has one of the largest transit systems in the world. Working with partners at the MTA to improve our transit, DOT has made significant progress in making bus service faster and more reliable. Since 2014, DOT has built 63.8 bus lane miles (including 12 Select Bus Service corridors) and established busways on 14th Street in Manhattan, on Main Street in downtown Flushing, and on Jay Street in Brooklyn.

The City has also installed 1,500 Transit Signal Priority intersections, which improve bus travel times by reducing the time buses are stopped at traffic lights along a corridor. The City also continues to advocate for and support the MTA in its implementation of congestion pricing, which will speed up buses in the Manhattan Central Business District and raise funding for transit improvements.

NYC Ferry

The City also introduced a new, reliable transit option to New Yorkers in 2017 with the launch of NYC Ferry, which connects New Yorkers and visitors to the city’s waterfront communities via six routes spanning over 60 nautical miles along the East River. Ridership increased from 4.9 million in 2018 to 6.4 million pre-pandemic, and the Economic Development Corporation in 2021 launched the St. George route, marking the expansion of the system to serve all five boroughs. To green the existing ferry fleet, DOT procured three new Staten Island Ferry boats with cleaner engines and is in the process of installing shore power at the Staten Island Ferry maintenance facility to reduce idling while at berth.

CitiBike

In 2013, to provide additional transportation options, the City worked with private partners to launch CitiBike, which is currently the largest bike share system in the world outside of China. The system, operated by Lyft, reached 100 million rides in July 2020 and has continued to grow. As of 2021, CitiBike has grown to nearly 1,500 stations and over 22,000 bikes across four boroughs, serving almost 100,000 trips a day during peak season.  In August 2022, Citi Bike surpassed 3.5 million trips, making it the highest ridership month since the program launched in May 2013.

Micromobility

In 2021 DOT launched an e-scooter pilot in the East Bronx with three operators and 3,000 vehicles. Since the launch of the pilot the program has already recorded over 950,000 rides.  Through phase 2 of the pilot, DOT will work with operators to double the scooter fleet and expand the pilot zone.
