FloodNet’s mission is to develop tools for real-time urban flood monitoring, implement these tools to measure flooding in New York City, and make flood data and monitoring tools available in a manner that is accessible and useful to stakeholders including residents, community-based organizations, government agencies, and researchers.

The FloodNet team is composed of researchers and other professionals at New York University, the City University of New York, and New York City government agencies who work in collaboration with stakeholders to collect and share data that contribute toward flood risk mitigation and building community flood resilience.

The Flood Sensors 

FloodNet sensors provide real-time information about flooding, including the presence, frequency, and depth of hyperlocal street-level flood events. The sensors use ultrasonic technology to collect depth measurements every minute and transmit the measurements wirelessly to servers. Flood data is publicly accessible, and displayed on the FloodNet data dashboard in real-time. The sensors operate independently of existing power and networking infrastructure and the information collected can help residents make critical decisions during flooding events such as which streets are safe to use, and whether or not their home will be impacted.

The Data Dashboard 

All FloodNet sensor data can be viewed publicly on our data dashboard. It shows where each FloodNet sensor is located, as well as the depth measurement values each sensor is taking in real time. Users can click on a sensor icon to view that sensor’s data. There is also a “List” view where users can scroll to view recent data from all flood sensors. This is a useful tool for identifying locations that have flooded in the 48 hours following a flood event.

Community Engagement  

Through the integration of a designated community engagement (CE) team, FloodNet NYC aims to foster sustainable impact within communities most at risk. Informed by community-based participation research methodology and implementation frameworks, the FloodNet community engagement strategy has three pillars: community outreach, community education, and community action.

Community Outreach: Our CE team connects with stakeholders to learn about their experience with flooding, identify areas prone to flooding, encourage feedback to inform sensor deployment, and build relationships. Outreach occurs with communities across the city through presentations, meetings, workshops, site visits, 1:1 conversation and feedback sessions, and other community-building efforts. 

Community Education: Our CE team engages partners and other stakeholders interested in participating in hands-on learning opportunities, offering regular feedback, and collaborating on the development of educational programming and materials. Led by our Community Engagement Manager, the CE team developed the FloodNet Community Workshop Series, which offers three distinct learning modules and sensor technology, FloodNet data access and interpretation, methods of data collection, and dialogue about community priorities related to flood resilience. 

Community Action: Our CE team’s efforts toward community action encourage and create opportunities for collaboration with partners to continue conversations about flood data and support community-building efforts.

We are constantly looking to build deeper relationships with communities across the city through presentations, community meetings, workshops, site visits, soliciting community feedback on FloodNet and sensor placement, as well as other community-building efforts.

How to Connect 

Help our partners at the NYC Community Flood Watch Project track where flooding happens by submitting photos to the MyCoast NY website 또는 mobile app. Your photos will educate residents, researchers, and government agencies about where flooding occurs, and what it looks like on the ground, to help prepare for future flood events.
